Going Places marketer quits over job changes

Going Places marketing director Kevin Welch has quit after his role was downgraded by managing director Tony Bennett.

Until October last year, Welch was also commercial director at the UK’s second largest travel retailer.

But his job changed when former Thomas Cook marketing director Bennett became managing director. Bennett hired ex-Thomas Cook commercial director Peter Shanks to take control of the commercial director’s role.

Shanks will take over Welch’s duties until Going Places appoints a replacement. An external candidate is favoured for the job.

Welch is believed to have been considering his position for the past fortnight and to have agreed on a severance package before leaving last week.

He had been with Going Places since the company was formed in 1993 and before that was marketing director, with commercial responsibilities, at Pickfords.

Pickfords, Hogg Robinson and Hourmont Travel shops were all rebranded as Going Places at the end of 1993.
