The Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre’s 30m development, due for completion next Septem ber, will make it the UK’s largest complex. The centre could also inject as much as 23m into the local economy.

The new centre, nicknamed the Armadillo by those working on the project, will be a major landmark for the city. When completed it will measure 84 metres in length and will be over 40 metres high, matching the 12th floor of the neighbouring Glasgow Moat House Hotel.

Once construction is completed, the new facility will offer a link into the SECC’s existing exhibition halls. It will have a full range of meeting rooms and support facilities including two further auditoria to house 300 and 620 delegates respectively.

The SECC’s existing facilities have also been upgraded with the addition of a new 5,000-metre exhibition hall.

Confirmed and provisional bookings for the new development to the year 2000 could generate 500,000 bednights for hotels in greater Glasgow.
