BP lines up for ABC Bonus Card

BP is understood to be talking to Safeway and Abbey National about accepting the ABC Bonus Card, the dual-purpose Safeway loyalty card and Electron debit card, launching next spring.

Safeway and BP have linked to test a combined petrol station and Safeway-branded convenience store in Basildon, and plan to add another four sites next year.

Stephen Taylor, Safeway’s marketing controller relationship marketing, confirms the ABC Bonus Card will be accepted in these outlets.

The ABC Bonus Card will be the first product launched by the strategic partnership between Safeway and Abbey National, announced at the end of last month.

As well as letting shoppers collect ABC points, it also functions as an Abbey National Electron debit card.

Customers can use it to pay for purchases in Safeway stores and 70,000 other retail outlets including WH Smith, Toys ‘R’ Us, C&A and Virgin. It will function as a cash card in Abbey National cashpoints.

Taylor adds that Safeway and BP have been discussing a wide range of other projects, although “no specific agreements have been reached yet”.

“There is almost nothing we haven’t been discussing with BP – but there is no specific timescale. There are a number of really obvious deductions you can make, but I can’t comment on any of them,” he says.
