Royal Mail chief is ‘staying put’

I must put the record straight about the story that I am to retire “in the wake” of a Post Office restructuring “Royal Mail boss to leave in shake up” (MW May 4). I have no plans to leave in the near future and indeed have been very involved in reshaping the organisation into units better designed to serve our markets.

That work has included setting up a unit – not mentioned in the story – solely accountable for Royal Mail’s direct mail market, to concentrate on the needs of that industry.

Although the major elements of the restructuring have now been completed there is of course still much work to do in my continuing role as managing director for Royal Mail’s business and consumer markets.

I have openly shared the thought that once the unit I lead has met certain ambitions I will retire but this is some way off and my personal plans in this direction in no way support the implications and “spin” of your story.
