Attic to target young women

Attic Futura, the publisher of teen titles Sugar, B and Boyzone, is launching a magazine aimed at women in their 20s, with the working title Project Joyce.

Managing director Vivien Cotterill says the launch is being planned for autumn this year. It is likely to be a monthly publication, although Attic was unwilling to comment on the issue of frequency.

It is Attic Futura’s first foray into the young adult women’s market.

Cotterill adds that the company is scrapping its &£10m online initiative plans, codenamed Project Teen.

Last month Attic announced the launch of a teen magazine, CD:UK, which is a spin-off from popular children’s ITV programmes SM:TV and CD:UK.

Attic’s Sugar is reported to be battling with BBC Worldwide’s recently launched Star and will face further competition from Cosmo Girl and Elle Girl, due for launch this spring.

The latest ABC figures show that Sugar suffered a 3.6 per cent year-on-year drop in circulation, although it managed to hold on to its market-leading position.

Cotterill, who was formerly at National Magazines Company, was poached by Attic to replace Neil Raaschou last October.

She worked on Cosmopolitan when Marie Claire launched against it, and was also publisher of She and launch publisher of Zest magazine.
