British Gas is launching “Green Bonds” for its customers as part of an energy efficiency drive.

A spokesman calls the bonds scheme a “little green thank you” to all existing customers, who will be entered into quarterly prize draws to win energy efficiency prizes for the home.

The Centrica-owned utility company says energy effiency is now a “major focus” for the brand. It is launching a number of schemes and advertising campaigns to advise customers on how to save energy and money.

The prizes include energy efficient home makeovers, Honda hybrid cars, wind up torches, solar-powered phones, iPod chargers and electrical appliances that are A-rated, the most economical.

The spokesman says: “We believe the best way to engage on energy efficiency is through positive incentives.”

British Gas last month launched its “Save a billion” campaign, which aims to encourage consumers to reduce energy waste by 1bn. It has also signed a sponsorship deal with London listings magazine Time Out (MW 21 September).

The Time Out sponsorship will include advertorials under the banner “Green Scene” in the news section of the magazine, as well as a presence on the magazine’s website and e-mail marketing.
