The Diary doesn’t need to tell anyone who left their house or turned on the TV or radio during the World Cup or, first couple of matches of, the Ashes that some people get pretty patriotic about international sporting events.

But Nike and the Olympic Committee are tempting Americans to take it a leap further with their support for their team at the 2008 summer Olympics in Bejing. If anyone is brave enough – or the other word that is often used as a substitute – Nike will pay for jack of all trades – tattoo artist, contributor to streetwear/lifestyle blog Supertouch, qualified biochemist and designer of the official US Olympic kit – Scott Campbell to tattoo a large team emblem (above) on their back. Yes, tattoo it on their back.

Nike is currently looking for athletic candidates, willing to endure three long, painful sessions under the coloured needles and have the finished image photographed as part of the Olympic campaign.

So, if you are American, patriotic to the point of delirium and deadly serious about going through with it, you can contact Campbell’s studio at info@mama-tried.net.

It still sounds more appealing to than flying one (or more, inversely proportional to braincells) of those rubbish, fluttery car window flags.
