Virgin Media has appointed Johnston Press digital director Alex Green (pictured) as its first managing director of its portal, as the cable company looks to push its broadband offering. Green has been tasked to accelerate Virgin Media’s online presence and growth.

Green, who joins later this month, will oversee and develop strategy and “broaden the appeal of the site to a wider audience”. He will report to Virgin Media chief executive of content Malcolm Wall.

Green spent two years leading the digital strategy of regional media group Johnston Press. Previously, he was media and telecoms director at Virgin Management Group, where he was responsible for driving media and telecoms initiatives within Virgin Group.

He has also worked at News International, where he was managing director of data specialist division Broadsystem.

Virgin Media says Green’s appointment is “unrelated” to the departure of its director of portal Chris Bunyan, who leaves the company this week. Earlier this month, Philip Snalune, Virgin Media group strategy director and managing director of its non-cable consumer division, stepped down to join directories publisher Yell as media development director (MW February 7).
