Alcohol producers and retailers join for Euro-wide campaign

Alcohol producers and retailers across Europe are planning to launch a marketing campaign to encourage responsible consumption of alcohol. It will be the first time a Europe-wide campaign has run highlighting the dangers of alcohol.

The decision follows a meeting last week in Brussels by the European Alcohol and Health Forum, formed last year to provide a common platform for all “interested stakeholders” at EU level that want to reduce underage drinking.

A spokesman for the World Federation of Advertisers says: “The move will mark the first time all stakeholders, including manufacturers, lobby groups and NGOs, retailers and health professionals will come together to look at launching a social marketing campaign – an information and education programme on the effect of harmful drinking.”

It has not yet been decided when the campaign will break. The next meeting of the European Alcohol and Health Forum will take place on November 13.

The campaign is also likely to look at promoting better enforcement of age limits for selling and serving alcohol.
