Food industry set environmental challenge

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) is urging the adoption of an industry wide best practice green initiative. FDF says companies need to adopt the voluntary code in partnership with Government best practice bodies.

It presented its Five-fold Environmental Ambition plan to over 200 representatives from food and drink companies, including United Biscuits, Cadbury Schweppes and Tate & Lyle, at a summit held in conjunction with the London Technology Network in London this week (April 23).

The plan sets out issues on how companies can aid the setting of environmentally-friendly targets. This includes achieving a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2010, sending zero food and packaging waste to landfill from 2015, reducing water use and aiding WRAP in reducing the level of packaging reaching households by 2010.

FDF director of sustainability Callton Young says: “We want companies to be inspired and take back to their places of work, ideas for making a real difference to the environment whether for direct application or future development.”
