Hanrahan joins the independent company from salary.com where she served as CMO and reports to chief executive officer Chris Cuddy.

She will split her time between the US and international territories and takes responsibility for leading teams in traffic, branding, content and public relations. Head of marketing UK Joseph Sikorsky remains in his position.

Hanrahan has led marketing teams for brands including General Mills and Lindt Chocolates.

Cheapflights has also promoted UK general manager Francesca Ecsery to global sales director. Ecsery joined the company in 2007 and has worked previously at Thomas Cook, Airtours and STA Travel.

Cuddy says: “Meredith’s experience of attracting and engaging users on a global scale will be invaluable in expanding Cheapflights’ “consumer champion” mission to travellers world-wide.”

Cheapflights launched in the UK in 1996 and relaunched its UK site in June 2008 with new interactive elements include travel guides and tips.

Former CEO of the company David Soskin was appointed to the board of Mysupermarket.com as vice chairman in July
