Compromise is a certainty for postal service

It is time to reconsider what defines the universal postal service (“Economic change has no respect for tradition”, MW last week).

With declining mail volumes we cannot support a service that is national, reasonably priced and daily. If we want to keep the first two we have to abandon daily deliveries and move to, say, three residential deliveries a week.

These days, who trusts the Royal Mail to deliver first class stamped birthday cards the next day anyway?
