Nintendo launches dedicated iPlayer channel on Wii

Nintendo is launching a dedicated channel for the BBC iPlayer on the Wii next week as it looks to grow the 900,000 users the service has had since becoming available on the Wii browser in April 2008.

BBC iPlayer

The iPlayer channel will be available to download from the Wii online store for free from 18 November.

When the iPlayer was first made available on the Wii web browser, users reported struggling with the interface. The relaunched iPlayer has been designed to address these problems, placing a stronger emphasis on service and more convenient navigation.

Erik Huggers, director of future media and technology at the BBC, said the new player was designed to provide a “faster, higher quality and improved viewing experience” in order to “offer audiences more ways to access the huge range of BBC content available”.

The iPlayer channel follows an existing trend that has seen Sky launching its Sky Player on the Xbox 360 in October (nma.co.uk 27 October 2009) and the iPlayer also being made available on Sony’s PlayStation 3.
