The deal, which will give PS3 owners access to shows including Coronation Street and This Morning, is the first part of the broadcaster’s distribution strategy for the ITV Player. It intends the player to be rolled out to other games consoles, TV and mobile devices in the near future.

The player will have a mix of free and ad-funded content, with pre-, post- and mid-roll video ads.

Fru Hazlitt, ITV’s MD of commercial and online, said, “Our viewers wantto watch their favourite content when and where they choose, so distributing the ITV Player to platforms beyond ITV.com will allow us to meet that demand. We’re really excited that they’ll soon be able to access the ITV Player on demand through the PS3 platform.”

Yesterday, ITV appointed Global Radio’s Robin Pembrooke to the role of MD of ITV.com, replacing Dominic Cameron.

Channel 4 is also in talks to launch 40D on the PS3.

BBC iPlayer is already on the PS3 and Nintendo Wii, and Sky Player is available on the Xbox.
