The role, created after a review by Martha Lane-Fox (pictured) into the role of the government services portal DirectGov, marries what was the DirectGov CEO role with that of the director for digital engagement and transparency.

Bracken, who currently oversees consumer-facing technology services and applications across Guardian News & Media titles, will lead the allocation and efficiency of website resources across the Cabinet Office, HM Treasury and departmental ministers.

He’ll report to Ian Watmore, the Government’s chief operating officer, based in the Cabinet Office, with responsibility for over 100 staff in the Government’s Digital Service. He joins the Cabinet Office on the 5 July.
