Former Channel 4 chief Andy Duncan is to join National Lottery operator Camelot as its first managing director with overall responsibility for marketing.

Duncan, who will join from luxury car dealer HR Owen in November, will be responsible for operations – including marketing, sales and insight – for The National Lottery in the United Kingdom.

His appointment, the company says, allows chief executive Dianne Thompson to focus on international growth.

Thompson says of Duncan : “He is an instinctive marketer with undoubted flair and a proven track record in growing brands and running businesses.Combine that with his experience in the digital sphere and I know that, under Andy’s leadership, Camelot will continue to deliver responsible and sustainable growth for The National Lottery.”

The announcement of his appointment follows the launch of Richard Desmond’s rival Health Lottery last week.

National Lottery sales have held up well despite falling disposable income. Ticket sales across all channels grew to an all-time high of £5,822m in the year to 31 March.

Duncan joined HR Owen in 2010 after five years in the top job at Channel 4 in 2009. He is a former Unilever marketer.
