TUI eyes digital expansion with new hire

TUI has signalled its intention to shift more of its sales online by creating a director level digital strategy role to explore ecommerce opportunities.

Sandra Leonhard has been promoted to the role of director of digital strategy and transformation. She will oversee the development of a “joint infrastructure” for the TUI Group, which includes Thomson and First Choice owner, TUI Travel and TUI Hotels & Resorts.

News of her appointment follows TUI Travel chief executive Peter Long’s claim earlier this week that online sales helped the division post record profit in its last financial year.

Operating profit increased 18% to £471m in the year to 30 September on the back of a 9% increase in revenue.

Leonhard is credited with the development of a web platform for Thomson. She has previously worked in e-commerce roles at Land Rover, Mini and Renault UK.
