Mail launches mobile commerce app

Daily Mail readers will soon be able to use smartphones to buy products from their newspaper’s pages in what is thought to be the first mobile commerce service of its kind.

Mail app

The paper uses an app called Simply Tap from Mobile Money Network (MMN) to sell its products.

Readers download the app onto their phone and can buy products including music, film and books from the Mail’s newspapers and web site, and a dedicated ‘Mail shop’ within the app. Initially, readers enter unique product code before buying but will soon be able to use image-recognition technology that uses a phone’s camera to recognise a product in an ad.

The mobile-commerce service was launched by MMN, which supplies mobile services for retailers and whose non-executive chairman is Stuart Rose, the former chief executive of Marks & Spencer.

The ‘Mail shop mobile checkout app’ is available now in the Apple App Store and Google Play.
