Sainsbury’s named Brand of the Year

Sainsbury’s beat competition from rivals including British Airways and Cadbury to be crowned the Marketing Week 2013 Engage Awards Brand of the Year in association with YouGov.

Sainsbury’s was applauded for its consistent excellence in marketing after winning the Brand of the Year ward.

The supermarket secured top honours at a glittering event at London’s Grosvenor hotel last night (21 May) attended by the best and the brightest of the marketing industry.

It was voted the ultimate winner by judges from a shortlist that was put together using YouGov’s BrandIndex tool. The company’s decision to throw its marketing clout behind the Paralympic Games as a sponsor was hailed as a “very brave” after activity spiked buzz around the brand last summer . There was also high praise for marketing initiatives such as “Live Well for Less” and “Brand Match”, which have helped the supermarket outperform the rest of the sector.

Meanwhile, Firefox’s director of global marketing John Bernard triumphed over nominees from brands including Match.com and BT to walk away with the Senior Marketer of The Year award, in association with Adobe.

Sainsbury’s creative shop AMV BBDO won the agency of the year award, presented in association with TV marketing body ThinkBox. The agency launched high-profile campaigns for global brands including Guinness, Galaxy and Snickers in 2012.

The packed out gala evening was hosted by television and radio personality Graham Norton with entertainment provided by upcoming singer Little Nikki and beatbox outfit Duke.
