KFC mocks Christmas no.1 singles in debut festive advert
KFC is poking fun at more traditional holiday-season campaigns with the launch a “Christmas Number 1” style music video as part of its humorous first festive push in the UK.
The video, which airs tomorrow (30 November) during X Factor, is filmed in the style of a Christmas Number 1 featuring the KFC choir performing the tongue-in-cheek tune “Come Together”. Lyrics such as “typically I hate your guts, and I’d try to kill you but, one of everybody’s vices, is 11 herbs and spices” aim to mock the more serious tone of other campaigns.
The BBH created advert is supported by a week-long Twitter competition allowing fans to tweet about someone they would like to make peace with over the holiday season. The winner will have the opportunity to resolve the conflict by starring in a second during the X Factor final on 14 December.
KFC is encouraging fans to use the #UniteThisXmas hastag throughout the campaign.
Meg Farren, marketing director at KFC, says the ad intends to “sends up the schmaltz of Christmas”.
She adds: “This Christmas, we not only wanted to do something different but also wanted to stay true to what KFC is about -bringing people together over a shared great taste – whilst having fun and encouraging people to join in. We’re also really excited about using social media in this way and engaging consumers using Twitter.”
Rival McDonald’s has opted for a more heartfelt tone for its own campaign encouraging people to visit its restaurants whether they like Christmas or hate it.
