888poker.com signs Liverpool’s Luis Suarez as brand ambassador

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez’s rising stock has been underlined with the news the Premier League’s top scorer has been signed up as a brand ambassador for online poker site 888poker.com.

The Uruguayan will become an “official worldwide ambassador” for the brand, a deal that will see the “keen poker enthusiast” playing online and appearing at live branded events.

The deal comes at the end of a season when the striker’s 31 goals helped Liverpool finish second behind Manchester City in the Premier League as well as landing him the Professional Footballer’s Association and Football Writer’s Association’s player of the year titles.

The success marks a significant turn of events for Suarez who a year ago was handed a six-game ban for biting an opponent, an offence that earned him a rebuke from main sponsor Adidas.

His stock has risen as a potential brand ambassador as well as footballer since. Last month, a study by Repucom found 44 per cent of football fans ‘liked’ him, up from 36 per cent a year earlier.

Suarez joins Australian cricket legend Shane Warne as a brand ambassador for 888. Warne is also no stranger to controversy and was fined by the Australian Cricket Board in 1995 for offering information to a bookmaker.
