10% to buy Christmas presents online

One in ten UK consumers will do their Christmas shopping on their mobiles, according to research from Tesco Direct.

The study of 4,000 consumers found nearly half said they’d use their phones to look for gifts.

It also found 78% of respondents were planning to buy gifts online before Christmas and 70% thought it was the best way to buy presents.

Ian Crook, chief marketing officer at Tesco.com, says: “Tesco Direct is expecting to ship more than 80,000 items today as we face our busiest day of the year for online orders.”

The survey also found 45% of respondents claimed they struggled to find time to purchase Christmas gifts due to work and family commitments.

“For the first time this year we anticipate a significant amount of these orders to be placed by customers using their mobiles, because customers like the convenience of shopping on the go,” says Crook.

The retail giant launched its first transactional mobile site earlier this month to boost online sales of consumer electronics goods.

The move came after Tesco found 7% of online Tesco Direct customers visited the site using their smartphones.
