Eight stand trial in the Peugeot case

Peugeot Talbot’s former head of UK corporate identity Philip Scaysbrook will appear at Birmingham Crown Court next Monday (February 6) with seven other defendants charged with corruption and conspiracy to corrupt.

The charges are the result of an 18-month investigation by fraud squad officers. Peugeot called in the police when it became suspicious about the alleged irregular movement of funds during a ú6m tendering process to build and install new signage at Peugeot dealerships and showrooms (MW August 12).

Scaysbrook is charged along with his wife Christine, Ricky Roberts and Malcolm Winwright of signage specialists Futurama of Surrey, and John Terry and Peter Holloway of Leeds-based Signs and Designs.

According to company information specialist Jordans, Futurama was one of the top ten performing UK private companies in 1991. During that year its profits trebled to ú3.7m, on a turnover of ú22m.

A spokesman for Peugeot confirmed the court appearance but would not comment further. The case is subject to reporting restrictions.

Under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906 any person either remunerating a company employee in return for benefit, or who, as an employee, accepts remuneration (including money gifts and benefits in kind), is guilty of a corrupt practice.
