GGT has beaten Ogilvy & Mather to the £9m advertising account for video rental chain Blockbuster UK.
Blockbuster put its advertising account up for grabs last November after a change in senior management, when the company brought in two directors from Burger King. Nigel Travis joined as vice-president for Europe and Vernon Salt as marketing director.
The previous agency, Young & Rubicam, joined a pitch for the Blockbuster business with Leo Burnett, BMP, D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Ogilvy & Mather and GGT. The final contest was between GGT and O&M.
The media-buying for the account goes to GGT’s media operation, Media Solutions.
Blockbuster aims to become the pre-eminent brand in home entertainment. It is phasing out video rental stores under the Ritz brand and converting them to the Blockbuster Express format.
A new campaign is expected to break in the early summer, using television and radio.
