Hogshead Ale Houses is Whitbread Inns’ second largest chain of pubs after Brewers Fayre – which has 225 premises. Whitbread says it is planning an “aggressive” expansion of the Hogshead brand, aimed at “discerning” drinkers of real ale.

The Brewers Fayre account, worth about ú5m, was won by WCRS at the end of last year.

Earlier this year, Whitbread awarded Clark and Taylor the advertising account for its third largest chain of pubs, Hotshots, in a campaign to target the youth market.

The move comes at a time of change in the pub industry, with new themed pubs rapidly replacing the traditional locals. A host of new players have entered the market since the MMC report of 1989 when brewers were ordered to sell off tranches of their pub estates.
