H Samuel hands ú2.5m budget to Duckworth Finn

Jewellery chain H Samuel has ended its search for an agency with the appointment of Duckworth Finn Grubb Waters. It has also more than doubled its advertising budget.

DFGW won the business in a final clash against J Walter Thompson. BMP DDB Needham and Laing Henry were knocked out in the first round of the four-way pitch earlier this month.

The business is estimated to be worth £2.5m, up from the £1m spent last year according to Register-MEAL figures.

This is the first time that H Samuel has retained a full-time agency. The appointment was instigated by marketing director Dianne Thompson, who joined the UK division of the Signet Group from Woolworths almost a year ago.

It is understood that DFGW’s brief is to concentrate on rebuilding the H Samuel brand as part of Signet’s ongoing efforts to distance itself from its Ratners past. The more upmarket brand, Ernest Jones, is not included in DFGW’s remit.
