Job not to most people’s taste

Petfood advertising executives tasting the product (Diary, MW March 10) Рapocryphal? Never. As part of the new product development consultancy team working with Nestl̩Petfoods in the late Eighties, I used to regularly chow down with the rest of the assembled cast of Nestl̩ Lintas, JWT and New Solutions on the latest offering from the Go-Cat recipe kitchen.

Fortunately, it was most often the dry stuff (like gritty Digestive biscuits with added Bovril – not too bad, and certainly better than some bag snacks). But we were known to try out the latest gravy variant for the canned stuff (not recommended unless your name’s Tiddles).

It might have been a test of our devotion to the client, but at least we had strong bones and teeth, our coats were glossy and our noses wet.
