UCI Cinema marketing director Guy Laurence has left the company to join Metro Goldwyn-Meyer as executive vice president of international distribution and marketing at MGA/UA Distribution.

United Distillers has appointed Gerd Biedenbacher as managing director of its UK operation in Perth, Scotland. He succeeds Graham Thompson, who has been appointed commercial development director for Europe – charged with reorganising the European region over the next four years.

David Winn, marketing chief at IBM’s PC operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), has been promoted to general manager at EMEA. A replacement has not been found.

Marlow Foods managing director Ralph Pickles is leaving the company to join Warner Jenkinson as managing director (Europe). He will be replaced by Nick Hughes, who is presently Asia-Pacific general manager (resins) for Marlow parent company Zeneca.

Legal & General has appointed Paul Hopper as director of marketing at its life and pensions division. He will co-ordinate advertising and marketing, and report to managing director of sales and marketing Robin Phipps.

AC Nielsen has reshuffled its top management structure, promoting Christos Cotsakos to president of AC Nielsen worldwide. He will report to Robert Lievense, executive vice president at The Dun & Bradstreet Corporation and chairman of AC Nielsen.

Carlsberg this week announced a three and a half year sponsorship package covering football at all levels – from Euro 96 down to semi-professional club football and pub teams. Carlsberg also becomes official beer of The Football Association.

Croda, the chemicals group, is selling off its cosmetics and toiletries business, which lost £700,000 last year.

Damart marketing director Martin Smith has left the company to join Saga Holidays as marketing director.

Country Club Hotel Group senior marketing manager Michael Smail has been promoted to director of marketing. He will be responsible for marketing activity at the group’s 29 UK hotels. Former marketing director Simon Sheard has left the company.
