Alamo Rent a Car, the US car hire company, has appointed CIA Medianetwork International to handle the £4m media planning and buying for its roll-out across Europe later this year. The appointment follows a two-way pitch last week between Carat and CIA. The UK incumbent, Carat subsidiary BBJ Media Services, has retained the £1.5m UK part of the account.

Edwards Martin Thornton and Burkitt Weinreich Bryant Clients and Company have confirmed their merger and formed Burkitt Edwards Martin with claimed combined billings of £40m. There are no client conflicts.

Rothmans is believed to be reviewing its media buying following the restructure of its marketing department. Robert Hoes joined as marketing director last week from the International Duty Free division.

Magnet, the kitchen company, is reviewing its advertising. Incumbent McCann-Erickson Manchester will pitch against MPA and Advertising Principles.

WCRS and Publicis are off the National & Provincial shortlist. Collett Dickenson Pearce and Duckworth Finn Grubb Waters will fight it out for the £7m account.

GGT and Publicis have pulled out of the £5m Littlewoods stores pitch. But Collett Dickenson Pearce has muscled onto the list and join J Walter Thompson, Young & Rubicam and Duckworth Finn Grubb Waters.

Barclays Bank has appointed DRS Advertising to handle a series of branch-focused direct marketing promotions this year.

Thorn (UK) has selected Evans Hunt Scott to develop a loyalty programme for electrical retailer, Radio Rentals, after a five-way pitch. The other direct marketing agencies involved in the pitch were Brann, Target Direct Marketing, Colleagues Direct Marketing and O&M Direct.

Wunderman Cato Johnson has been forced off the £20m BT direct marketing roster by former Mercury agency Barraclough Hall Woolston Gray. Three other agencies have also been appointed to work on the account. Ogilvy & Mather Direct will handle the bulk of the personal operations along with Craik Jones, while BHWG and Payne Stracey will handle the business side.
