Chanel spots opening for fake freckles

Copying the trend for the “little girl” image of the catwalk, Chanel is adding a new pencil to its cosmetics range designed to create realistic freckles.

The Faux Freckle Pencil will go on sale during July and August at 100 UK department stores. Designed in Chanel’s black livery, it will cost ú11.

Instructions tell consumers to apply it to their cheekbones and nose to achieve the right look. One end of the pencil consists of a smudging tool that Chanel says will help false freckles look more convincing.

The pencil will be sold for just one season in the UK. Chanel does not intend to advertise the product. It will rely instead on point-of-sale displays.

“This is part of Chanel’s effort to gain a high-fashion profile,” says Chanel market development manager Timothy Walcot.

“The `little girl’ look is quite in. This is intended as a bit of fun,” adds Walcot.
