The charity Refuge is launching a hard-hitting cinema ad campaign highlighting the prevalence of domestic violence, as part of its attempt to persuade the Government to run a public education programme. The ad claims 25 per cent of women suffer violence at the hands of their partners – a higher proportion than go shopping on a Saturday, have given up smoking, or swim regularly. “Until society is made aware, and the issue is addressed, the scenario of domestic violence will remain the same,” says Refuge chief executive Sandra Horley. “It exists and it is up to us all to do something about it.”
