Help is at hand on the buses

The Isle of Jura off the Scottish coast has a population of 200, many of whom work at the local Whyte & Mackay distillery, producing Isle of Jura Single Malt whisky.

But the local transport system has been under intense pressure since one of the island’s two bus drivers, Charlie MacLean MBE, retired earlier this year. It had been left to his son-in-law Alec Dunnachie to run the bus service single handedly.

Now help is at hand.

Boarding-house landlady Gwen Boardman, distillery foreman

Duncan Buie and fisherman Davy Gilmour have all taken and passed the Passenger Carrying Vehicle test.

They will all now be able to work on a rota system to take schoolchildren to the ferry and pick up the mail.
