S. Telegraph magazine hires Tyrrel as Chancellor departs

Ex-Granada md Steve Morrison is heading ITV’s marketing group – a popular appointment, finds Paul McCann

The Sunday Telegraph has appointed Rebecca Tyrrel, deputy editor of Tatler, to edit its troubled new magazine, replacing Alexander Chancellor, who was sacked last week.

The Telegraph’s owner, Conrad Black, is known to have been unhappy with the magazine’s editorial (MW, October 20) and the Sunday paper’s slipping circulation since the magazine’s launch.

“The magazine has been turgid, worthy and esoteric,” says a senior Telegraph source. “It looks great and agencies are keen to get into it, but there’s never anything to read in it.”

Tyrell is being brought in to give the title a “stylish gloss that will make it a lighter read”, according to the source.

The decision to publish the heat-set review section was taken by Black personally because of increased newsprint costs. Sources say he regards it as his “baby”.

The Sunday Telegraph’s circulation fell 1.7 per cent between August and September following the launch of the magazine and the ending of a 18-month promotion offering the Saturday and Sunday Telegraphs for 1.

In October, sales stood still at 673,540 after 18 months of previous growth. The magazine was launched with a 1m ad campaign in London.
