Northwest Airlines has appointed TBWA to its 1.5m European account.

The US airline fired Impact FCA! six months ago because it was part of the Publicis Group. Publicis was appointed to do the media buying for airline rival BA last year (MW May 5 1995).

A four-way pitch between Bates Dorland, Butler Lutos Sutton Wilkinson, Osprey Park and TBWA was followed by a head-to-head between Butler Lutos and TBWA.

Before Impact FCA!, the account was with FCB, which still handles the business in the US. In the early Nineties, the account was with advertising agency Hoare Wilkins, which subsequently merged into TBWA.

TBWA refuses to comment on whether it had been awarded the account.

NW Airlines’ manager, marketing programmes, Atlantic Region Colin Barette, who is based at the company’s Crawley office, says he was unable to confirm the agency’s appointment.

The account is for work across the UK, France and Germany.
