Graham Hinton tipped ‘hot’ favourite for top Bates post

Graham Hinton, former chairman of D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, is emerging as the favoured candidate for a senior role at Bates Dorland.

Bates has been looking for a md since John Stubbings was moved to take on a broader role as European client services director.

There are understood to be four candidates, with key figures on the Bates board favouring Hinton. It is likely the successful candidate will not be a direct replacement for Stubbings, but will carry a different title.

If Hinton is appointed he will ultimately report to Michael Bungey, chairman of Bates Worldwide as well as Bates Dorland in the UK, and Paul Twivy, Bates group chief executive officer. The agency is understood to have had a difficult time finding a candidate acceptable to both men.

Hinton stepped down as chairman of DMB&B in August 1995, a move which had seemed likely after his long-term partnership running the agency with Tony Douglas ended with Douglas’ sacking in February 1995.
