Advertising agencies are claiming victory over ITV in the battle to stop the channel’s airtime sales being concentrated into just two sales points (MW January 19). Heritage Secretary Virginia Bottomley told a meeting of leading members of the Incorporated Practitioners in Advertising this week that she intends to retain the 25 per cent of commercial TV revenue limit on sales houses in the Broadcasting Bill.

WCRS and Saatchi & Saatchi are pitching for Project Energy, an initiative by the Energy Savings Trust to promote energy efficiency to consumers. A spokeswoman expects a decision by next week and a TV and press campaign to start by the end of September.

McCann-Erickson’s latest Gold Blend ad (right) breaks on Mon-day in the middle of Coronation Street. It will be episode six in the second series of the romantic ad saga, featuring actors Louise Hunt, Marcus Gilbert and Mark Aiken. The first Gold Blend couple appeared in 1987. Annual ad spend is about 7.5m.

Gareth Coombs, the director in charge of accounts including AT&T and Van den Bergh Foods, at McCann-Erickson has quit the agency .

Lowe Howard-Spink has promoted Gary Birtles, group head on General Motors, to joint deputy media director alongside Robert McIntosh, who came from Grey Entertainment Media.

Grey Direct has been appointed by Reed Travel Group to develop the branding of the Official Airline Guide, after a pitch against D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Bozell, and Draft Direct. The account is worth 2.5m.

The Central Office of Information has invited Duckworth Finn Grubb Waters, Lewis Gace Bozell, Medicus DMB&B and Simons Palmer Denton Clemmow & Johnson to pitch for a 150,000 piece of business promoting the virtues of reduced paperwork to general practitioners.
