Asda supermarket has lodged a complaint with the European Commission against the price fixing of over-the-counter (otc) drugs. The supermarket wants price maintenance over otc drugs to be declared unlawful.

British Gas has taken on Roger Wood as managing director of its loss-making British Gas service business. He was formerly managing director of Matra Marconi Space UK.

Dolland & Aitchison, the optician chain, has picked Alisdair Luxmoore – formerly responsible for developing the Vauxhall brand at General Motors – as marketing director.

Citibank has hired Ellen Alemany as its media and communications industry head of its newly organised global relationship banking business. The World Professional Billards & Snooker Association is relaunching snooker (right) in the UK. The BBC is shifting its coverage to primetime viewing as a result of the association promoting the sport as an Olympic and Commonwealth event.

Michael Smail has been appointed director of marketing at hotel group Travel Inn. Smail will be responsible for marketing activity in support of the company’s 115 hotels throughout Britain. Previously, Smail was director of marketing with Country Club Hotels, another Whitbread brand.

Burger King’s 1996 sponsorship of the England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland football teams is being backed with a pop-up gamecard promotion. 50 VIP trips are being offered to friendly international matches.

BSkyB has suspended the Action Man TV show, due to be launched this month, after the Independent Television Commission questioned toy manufacturer Hasbro’s involvement in the series (MW April 5).

Pepsi Cola, Pepsi Max and Diet Pepsi are to be sold in wide-mouthed bottles so consumers can drink more cola, more quickly. These ‘Slam Pack’ 500ml bottles are a response to Coke’s ‘Contour’ bottle and Virgin’s ‘Pammy’.

Nestlé has launched two new products: Rowntree’s Jelly Beanz and Rowntree’s Mini Jelly Babies.
