Spar plans own-label lager range to attack top brands

Spar is launching a range of own-label lagers to take on top brands in five different market sectors.

The products, which will be priced below leading brands, are being launched into Spar shops this week. They are billed as “drought busters” and will be supported with advertising and in-store promotions. There will also be a competition carrying the first prize of a trip to Death Valley in California.

Spar Lager Pilsner has an alcoholic strength of three per cent, and is marketed as a “Danish Pilsner”. Spar Extra has an ABV of 4.2 per cent. Spar Premium Gold Bier will compete in the premium lager sector and has an ABV of five per cent. Spar Pils will take on Holsten Pils with an ABV of 5.5 per cent.

In the super-strength sector, Spar is launching Spar Strong and Pure, with an ABV of 8.5 per cent to take on Carlsberg Special Brew and Tennents Super.
