Dillons hires new director of marketing

Dillons, the bookshop chain owned by Thorn EMI, has appointed former Littlewoods Stores marketing director Findlay Caldwell as its new marketing director.

Caldwell, who has also previously been marketing services director at Boots the Chemist, joins next week.

He quit Littlewoods in March after he was moved out of the marketing director post into a new role to “explore ventures” for the chain. He joined from Boots in 1994.

Dillons managing director Joe Sinyor says: “Findlay brings with him a wealth of experience of marketing and in the distribution and logistic field. He will add value to our business as we further develop our marketing strategy.”

The company has been without a marketing director since Stephen Dunne left last February. The 100-store chain was bought from its previous owner, the collapsed Pentos group in March 1995, and integrated into Thorn EMI’s HMV division.

Caldwell’s job will be to market the chain in the post price-fix bookselling market. The chain was a prime mover in bringing about the demise of the Net Book Agreement.
