First cable link for BBC in drama deal with Sci-Fi channel

The BBC has entered a joint programming deal with UK cable and satellite stations for the first time, linking with the Sci-Fi channel for a drama series to run this autumn.

It is expected that the BBC will make an announcement this week about a six-part drama series that will screen first on the BBC and then on the Sci-Fi channel.

The Sci-Fi channel was involved in the BBC2 series Secrets of the Paranormal, which although produced solely by the Corporation, was made in association with the cable channel.

Terri Marsh, Sci-Fi vice president of programming, confirms the channel is linking with the BBC, but will not disclose any further details.

Linda Stone, the BBC’s business development manager for drama, was not available to comment about the move into co-production.

It is understood that the initiative is designed to help the BBC recover upfront programme-making costs.

This is more cost-effective than selling on the programmes after they have aired.
