MGN selects md for Independent

Mirror Group Newspapers has appointed Jeremy Reed as managing director of The Independent and Independent on Sunday, as predicted by Marketing Week (August 16).

The position of ad sales director for the newspapers is to be filled by display ad manager Guy Griffiths.

Reed is a long-time associate of Mirror Group chief executive David Montgomery. He worked as ad sales director of Today at News International in the late Eighties, when Montgomery was editor. He also acted as a consultant to Montgomery when Mirror Group was looking at buying a share in Newspaper Publishing, the owner of The Independent, in March 1994.

Reed’s move completes three weeks of movement at Mirror Group. He replaces Amanda Platell, who has moved from the managing director’s position to be editorial consultant on the Sunday Mirror (MW August 16). The week before, Roger Eastoe, deputy managing director of Mirror Group, added the position of managing director of the Daily Mirror to his responsibilities.

Reed spent 15 years at News International, in positions which included ad manager of The Sun and News of the World and commercial director of The Times.

After that he was briefly consultant and commercial manager of The European.

He lost out in a reorganisation of the group’s senior management in May 1993, when five commercial directors left News International on the same day.
