Green wellies maker on hunt for ad agency

Hunter wellington boots, one of the essential status symbols of both the landed gentry and the Eighties’ yuppie, is tipped to be launching an ad campaign.

The Gates Rubber Company, which owns the brand, has been talking to London agencies about the top-quality green boots, made famous in the late Seventies after the Royal family was seen wearing them at field events. The company is the holder of two Royal warrants.

Gates Rubber, based in Dumfries, is also believed to be approaching Scottish agencies with the business. It was a client of Faulds Advertising Agency about six years ago, but is not believed to be aligned to an above-the-line agency at present.

The Scottish division celebrated 100 years of operation in 1988. It was known as North British Rubber Company, changed to Uniroyal in 1966 and then to Gates Rubber Company in 1987. It is a subsidiary of the US company Gates Corporation of Denver.

Gates Rubber also specialises in the carpet underlay Tredaire and power transmission belts for cars, lawnmowers and food mixers.

No one at the company was available for comment as Marketing Week went to press.
