Dixons cuts down list of Internet providers

The Dixons Group, which includes Currys, PC World and The Link stores, is slashing the number of Internet packages it offers through its 800 stores.

Dixons says it is reviewing its partnership with CompuServe, the UK’s leading content provider, as its primary online service while others, such as America Online, UK Online and NetCom, will disappear from the Dixon Group stores.

A Dixons spokesman says: “We want to simplify the proposition we offer the consumer. Within the next few months we will work with just two partners.”

Internet outfit UUNet Pipex has just signed a deal with the electrical retail giant to be its sole Internet service provider.

Pipex tied with book publisher Rough Guide to launch a new product called the Pipex Dial Rough Guide to the Internet.

The 24.99 package contains 30 days free access to the Web, a Rough Guide to the Internet book, up to five e-mail addresses, and space to build a Website. The package will be launched in mid-October.

The deal takes UUNet Pipex’s strong corporate presence onto the high street. Marketing manager Matthew Townend says: “There are roughly 133 Internet providers in the country. This [deal] gives us a chance to blitz the consumer market.”
