Free Sun to promote new Lottery draw

The Sun is being given away free today (Wednesday) in a sponsorship deal with Camelot to promote the first Wednesday National Lottery draw.

The Sun claims it will print millions of extra copies to cope with extra demand. The Sun usually sells 3.9 million copies a day at 28p. The print run from the giveaway will not be included in The Sun’s official circulation figure.

The sponsorship includes an eight-page supplement promoting the Wednesday draw and the Lottery’s donations to Good Causes.

When the Daily Mirror was printed on blue paper to mark Pepsi’s “blue day” (MW March 29 1996) The Sun’s editor claimed he had told Pepsi he would not compromise the newspaper’s editorial integrity for an advertiser.

The deal is believed to have been struck by Camelot’s agency, Saatchi & Saatchi.
