Iceland song gets a warm reception

The Diary was alarmed to hear the BBC running a commercial for frozen food chain Iceland on Radio One this week, until the penny dropped. The “jingle” was, in fact, the latest single from up-and-coming pop band Bennet.

The group has just released a tune with the catchy refrain “Thank God, Mum’s gone to Iceland”, which as all retail marketers will know, is a slight bastardisation of the store’s old advertising slogan.

Iceland switched phrases at the end of 1995 to “Iceland makes it easier for Mum” – but as they say all publicity is good publicity. Rumour has it that the song has caused such a stir, shoppers are asking for it in the chain’s shops and looking for the CD among the frozen peas.
