Midland’s chief moves to Amex
Midland Bank marketing chief Peter Godfrey, who oversaw the return of the “Listening Bank” strapline and dropped the griffin logo, has quit to join American Express as regional president for Europe.
Godfrey’s role as general manger, marketing, card and electronic banking has been divided into two positions.
Griffin Credit Services managing director Alan Hughes, who has little consumer marketing experience, will become head of marketing. Richard Spence, Midland Central Division senior manager branches, will become head of card services.
Godfrey replaced Midland’s head of marketing Geoff Ellerton in January last year and restructured the marketing department. Last month, Midland axed the griffin from its logo and launched an ad campaign through St Luke’s bringing back the “Listening Bank” strapline.
Godfrey had previously been in charge of card services at Midland.
According to sources close to Midland, the bank doubled his salary last year, but American Express’ offer was too good to turn down – it is over 100,000.
Godfrey’s role at American Express will be to lead the consumer card and lending business across Europe. He joins on June 1.
