After New Labour’s stunning election landslide, DIY chain Wickes has decided to follow its lead. The company was hit last year by a 50m accounting scandal that led to the axing of most of its top management and the hiring of retail expert Bill Grimsey as boss.
Not to be outdone by Tony Blair, Grimsey has taken a leaf out of the Prime Minister’s book, and rechristened the DIY chain New Wickes. This provides advertising agency Clark & Taylor with the chance to come up with some catchy slogans to win over the DIY-voting public.
They could try “New Wickes, New Grouting”, “Chippies deserve better”, and for City investors: “Tough on dodgy accounting, tough on the causes of dodgy accounting”.
Perhaps Grimsey could offer his services to Prime Minister Blair by sorting out a few of those odd jobs that are certain to need doing around Number 10.
