Eight agencies to bid for 2m Carlton films

Carlton Film has invited eight media agencies to pitch for an upcoming new film, with the understanding that the winner will take on its entire business.

The new film, called Eight Heads in a Duffel Bag, comes out later this year and has a budget of 250,000. However, the rest of the Carlton Film business is worth about 2m.

The eight agencies invited to pitch are Bates Dorland, CIA, MCS, New PHD, Saatchi & Saatchi, Target Media, TMD Carat and Zenith Media.

The catalogue was sold to Carlton Communications by the Rank Group in April for 65m. It contains over 740 features, ranging from classic films from the Thirties to the present day. Previously any advertising for the company had been handled ad hoc.

The catalogue includes the Carry On films, the Ealing comedies, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes, David Lean’s Great Expectations, and modern films like The Shawshank Redemption.

Carlton will also be able to exploit the catalogue in its digital broadcasting pact with Granada and BSkyB.
