Excite, the US-based Internet search service, has struck a deal with EMAP Online to give Excite users access to EMAP’s Internet Directory UK Website, at www. internet-directory.co.uk, from June 1. The deal coincided with last month’s formal launch of British, German and Swedish versions of Excite’s search system.

BT will launch a new online commerce service later this month, called BT Trading Places, aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. The service allows companies to bid for contracts and buyers to browse for the best deals on offer. The scheme has been on trial by members of the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce, and is expected to go national in September.

Microsoft’s proposed purchase of Web TV will be reviewed by the US Department of Justice. The department, which has the power to block the move, will examine if the deal is contrary to the country’s rules of fair competition.

The Patent Office has launched its own Website this week. It has over 400 pages and will include information about intellectual property as well as a full range of services the department offers. The address of the site is http://www.patent.gov.uk.
