Sara Lee Bakery is looking for an ad agency. Marketing director Rooney Anand says there will be a spend of about 1.5m, but the precise figure depends on the ideas generated. He declines to reveal which agencies he is talking to.

The Pocket Phone Shop, the mobile phone retailer, is believed to have invited several agencies to pitch for a 1m-plus ad account. The 25-strong chain expects to double the number of retail outlets by the year end.

The Advertising Association says ad expenditure in the UK was the highest on record since the all-time high of 1989. According to the latest figures, spending increased by 6.7 per cent in real terms to 11.99bn in 1996. The smaller media – posters, transport, radio and cinema – accounted for seven per cent of the total spend.

The Publicis Group registered a seven per cent increase in turnover to FF22bn (2.3bn) in 1996, compared with the previous year. The group confirmed plans to strengthen its position in the Latin American and Asian markets at an AGM held in Paris last week.

Vimto has relaunched its entire product range in a link-up with the cartoon character Purple Ronnie (right). The 3m relaunch, the biggest Vimto has undertaken in its 90-year history, will include new packaging and advertising through Cheetham Bell.

One2One has appointed WWAV Rapp Collins to handle its loyalty scheme. The agency will work alongside the mobile phone operator’s existing below-the-line agency Hubbard Hiwaizi McCann.

Ogilvy & Mather Direct managing director Richard Bainbridge has resigned from the agency without another job to go to. It is understood he did not agree with the board about the direction of the agency.

Grey and EURO RSCG Wnek Gosper have been dropped from the Classic FM/BMG record label launch advertising shortlist. Mellors Reay, BST-BDDP and Abbott Mead Vickers.BDDO are still being considered for the 2m account.

The Consumers’ Association is calling for tighter rules for the Advertising Standards Association, including having powers to fine offenders, having a consumer representative on the ASA council and Committee of Advertising Practice, and making investigations public.

The European Parliament is to respond to the EC Green Paper on commercial communications on June 25. At stake is whether MEPs vote for a single market in advertising and media or let member states continue to impose their own regulations.

New Media Marketing & Sales, the Internet advertising sales house, has appointed Charles Marks as sales director.
